You can try. You have to specify the right format in the file options dialog, and you have to name the file just right else you'll get weirdness.

To anyone interested: It works. I uploaded a custom-made animated .gif with my latest movie, and it appeared as the preview. There are no dark or redundant frames, and the file I made is smaller than many archive preview images..
